UEIL 2021 Virtual Congress “From business resilience to sustainable growth – Re-imagining the future of the lubricants industry “
The Virtual edition of the UEIL Congress was organised over two days, on 20th and 21st October 2021.
The theme for 2021 was “From business resilience to sustainable growth – Re-imagining the future of the lubricants industry”. Topics included resilience & growth, sustainability in the lubricants industry, the European Green Deal and its impact for our sector, sustainable mobility, bio-based lubricants as well as diversity in the industry.
The Congress featured a mix of keynote speeches and technical presentations by prominent speakers, as well a series of roundtables. As UEIL also appreciates the importance of networking in those particular times, the event platform hosted two networking sessions where participants had the opportunity to organise bilateral networking meetings.

Anna Rita Carta, Eni
SPEAKER: Circular economy in the lubricants industry
BIOGARPHY:
Anna Rita is a business manager with solid experience in the energy sector. She is passionate about innovation and works always with passion, motivation, and spirit of initiative. She is a graduate in Chemical Engineer and since she was a student she has always been fascinated by waste valorisation and the world of recycling. In fact, her thesis has been about “Energy valorisation of solid waste through combustion in a fluidized bed.” She is responsible for Eni Business Lubricants and has been working in Eni for 20 years. Previously, she was a Product Manager and process engineer in Sannazzaro e in Gela Refinery at the beginning of her career. She is also member of the following boards of directors: Enifuel, Eninefto, Cepim, CONOU and the strategic Group of Lubricants in UNEM (Italian petroleum Union).
Brent Lok, Novvi
SPEAKER: The value of diversity and inclusion in the workplace
BIOGRAPHY:
Brent Lok joined Chevron in 1981 with a Ph.D. in chemical engineering from Stanford University. His tenure at Chevron focused on the lubricants industry. He started out in process and product technical support of RLOP Group II base oils, including the early development of Chevron’s ISODEWAXING technology. In 1989 Brent moved over to market and product management of finished lubricants, managing a wide range of lubricant products. In 1995, he came back to base oils ultimately becoming the global manager of base oil marketing and business development. He commercialized Chevron’s Group III base oils, UCBOs in 1997. In addition, he guided long-range strategies for Chevron’s global base oil business, in addition to being accountable for the product technology, marketing and business development support for Chevron’s base oil business, including the business justification for Chevron’s second major base oil investment, the PBOP base oil plant in Pascagoula, Mississippi in 2014.
After retiring at Chevron in 2019, Brent was recruited by Novvi in 2020 to be their V.P. Marketing, helping to market Novvi’s renewable base oil products.
Christian Hartmann, TAYRAŞ
SPEAKER: Circular economy in the lubricants industry
BIOGRAPHY:
Christian is an entrepreneurial person. Parallel to his studies in economics at the Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich, Christian Hartmann managed the commercial part of a medium-sized machine building company. He combines more than 30 years of experience in waste oil, recycling and the lubricant industry. As Managing Director, he has developed the BAUFELD and Puralube/Puraglobe group since 1990 until 2018. He participated as relevant shareholder in bitumen, paraffin, recycling of spent catalysts, waste management digitalization, enterprises, and others. Christian has also been part of diverse expert councils and served as president of GEIR and board member of UEIL. Currently he chairs the UEIL Statistics Committee and the Raw Material Group within the UEIL Sustainability Committee. Recently, he has taken up a new challenge as Chief Sustainability Officer at Tayras Baz Yag Rafineri A.S., Turkey, developing the business of the first base oil group II/III re-refinery in the wider region with dedication to sustainability and growth.
Diana Higgins, Chevron
SPEAKER: The value of diversity and inclusion in the workplace
BIOGRAPHY:
I joined Chevron back in 2000 as a Team Secretary. Since then, I have undertaken a number of roles, including Executive Assistant, HR Assistant, Employee Relations Advisor, Projects and Planning Advisor as well as a Senior HR Business Partner. These roles have seen me support a number of business units, including Lubricants, across the Europe, Middle East and Africa regions.
Whilst working at Chevron they supported my continuing learning and so I finished obtaining my BA Business Studies degree at London Metropolitan University, I started and completed my MA in Personnel & Development at the University of Westminster and received my Charted Institute of Personnel Development accreditation.
I recently joined Chevron’s office of Diversity, Inclusion, and Ombuds based in our London office. In my role as Senior Diversity & Inclusion Business Advisor for Europe, Middle East and Africa, I help to establish and maintain internal key stakeholder partnerships to drive D&I initiatives across the enterprise as well as provide consultative support and guidance on diversity and inclusion initiatives, projects, analysis, and programs.
Enrique Garcia John, European Commission, DG Environment
KEYNOTE SPEECH: The European Green Deal
BIOGRAPHY:
Enrique is a biochemist and a toxicologist working as a policy officer in the Waste Management and Secondary Materials Unit of DG Environment. He works in areas related to the interface between chemicals, products and waste and is currently involved in the implementation of the Circular Economy Action Plan. Before joining the European Commission in 2010 he worked for 19 years as a consultant in the fields of environmental management and chemical safety.
Horst Fehrenbach, ifeu
SPEAKER: Circular economy in the lubricants industry
BIOGARPHY:
Biologist and scientific director at ifeu. He joined the ifeu in 1991 and is managing and coordinating projects since 1994. In the 1990s, his work focused on the evaluation of environmental issues in the waste management sector. In addition to carrying out environmental impact studies and risk analyses for concrete plant planning (waste incineration plants, power plants, etc.), he conducts life cycle assessments and system comparisons of various waste management options. He has developed sustainability criteria and a basis for calculating greenhouse gas emissions for the German government. He has developed the first version of the ifeu refinery model in the late 90ies and applied it within a number of LCA studies in the field of mineral oil products. The LCA studies for the GEIR association and carbon footprint studies for individual companies are particularly worthy of mention.
Dr Ian Field, ATC Europe

BIOGRAPHY:
Dr Ian Field studied chemistry at Oxford University, gaining an MA and D.Phil. in physical-organic chemistry. From 1979 he worked in the lubricant additive industry, joining first Paramins (a division of Exxon Chemical) and subsequently Infineum UK Ltd (an ExxonMobil/Shell JV) on its formation in 1999. In 2014 he formed Ian Field Consulting Limited which provides technical consultancy to the fuel and lubricant additive industry.
After a period in new lubricant additive component development and leading a research team, he moved to customer technical service where he formulated lubricant additive packages for oil marketer customers. Later he moved into Industry Liaison, gaining experience in both fuels and lubricants activities. From 2001 he was a European Industry Liaison crankcase lubricant representative for Infineum, responsible for contacts with several European OEMs as well as external relationships in the additive industry. From 2007 he held global responsibility for Infineum’s crankcase Industry Liaison activities.
Within ATC, Ian represented Infineum in the Main Committee. He has been chairman the Performance Testing Subgroup in which role he was involved in the tri-partite AAA forum, leading the ATC team in these discussions, chairman of the Representational Steering Group which manages ATC policy and external relationships, and was also president of ATC.
Ian has been involved in CEC activities for many years and was a member of the CEC Management Board representing ATC from 2006 to 2015 and was vice president from 2013 to 2015.
Jennifer Jordan, IMD Business School

Facing one of the most disruptive and transformational times in the 21st century, leaders are having to learn how to motivate, influence, and enable their teams in an entirely new, and constantly changing, environment. This “new type” of leadership requires a specific set of skills, behaviors, and mindset. In this keynote, I will talk about what leaders need to think and do and how to start doing it.

Jennifer Jordan is a Professor of Leadership and Organizational Behavior at IMD in Lausanne, Switzerland. She also holds an honorary chair in Human Resource Management at the University of Groningen in The Netherlands. Jennifer’s researches, teaches on and consults in the areas of leading digital, power and influence, and ethics. Prior to IMD, Jennifer was a lecturer at the Kellogg School of Management and Tuck School of Business in the United States. Her research articles are published in several top journals within management and social psychology and Jennifer serves on the editorial boards of two academic journals. In 2019, Jennifer was named as one of the top 40 MBA professors worldwide under 40 years of age by Poets and Quants and nominated for a Thinkers50 Radar Award. Jennifer received her doctorate degree and two masters degrees from Yale University.
John Eastwood, Croda
SPEAKER: Sustainability in the lubricants industry
BIOGRAPHY:
John is Head of Global Business Development in Croda’s Energy Technologies Business Group, where he leads on Sustainability, strategic partnerships and continues to play an active role in product innovation.
John trained as a Chemist before joining ICI Lubricants (now Croda) in 1987. John has held positions including Technical Specialist in Industrial and Automotive lubricants and Global Marketing Manager.
John is an active member of the UEIL Sustainability Committee and is Chair of ATC’s Sustainability Sub-committee.
Katty Hoste, Chevron
MODERATOR: The future of sustainable mobility
BIOGRAPHY:
Katty joined Chevron in 2003 after obtaining a PhD in Polymer Chemistry at the University of Gent, Belgium. Her first role in Chevron was as a Product Development Chemist specialising in industrial applications. Later she moved on to the role of TeamLeader Technical Support. In 2008 she joined Chevron Base Oils as Marketing Specialist for Europe supporting the group II base oil business development in Europe. In 2018 Katty moved to the role of Business Development Manager Europe for Chevron Base Oils.
Laurence Reynolds, Cipelia
SPEAKER: From resilience to re-imagination of the future
BIOGRAPHY:
Laurence REYNOLDS is the CEO of CIPELIA, a family-owned lubricant and grease holding company based in Amiens France. CIPELIA was founded in 1936 by her great grandfather. It became one of the regional entities of the French lubricant company IGOL in 1949 (IGOL Picardie Champagne). Her father Joël LECLERCQ acquired IGOL Picardie Champagne in the late 1980’s and grew the business externally to create what we know today. CIPELIA owns several companies specialising in Automotive and industry lubes, greases and other related products. Cipelia sells around 40% of its production overseas across over 100 countries.
Laurence graduated from the University of Paris II Assas in Banking and Finance in 1997 and in Business in 1998 before setting off for the UK where she made a career in finance. Far from the lube business despite being born in the lube business….
It is in 2014 that Laurence started to work in France by joining CIPELIA as CEO. Alongside her role within CIPELIA, Laurence is also the President of the French Lubricant Association (CSNIL), the Vice-President of the Centre Professionnel des Lubrifiants (CPL) and a member of the business representatives group within the Banque de France.
Lou Honary, President, Environmental Lubricants Manufacturing
SPEAKER: The future of bio-based lubricants: challenges and opportunities
BIOGRAPHY:
Lou Honary is president of Environmental Lubricants Manufacturing, Inc., and a world-renowned advocate for biobased grease and lubricants. Dr. Honary served as professor and founding director of the National Agriculture-Based Lubricants (NABL) Center at the University of Northern Iowa where his team developed over 30 vegetable oil-based grease and lubricant formulations. In 2000, NABL’s patented technology was transferred to a new commercial start-up company, ELM co-founded by Dr. Honary and the University of Northern Iowa Research Foundation.
Honary has served as officer, editorial advisor, and board member for several technical organizations including ASTM, SAE, NFPA, NLGI, ELGI, and STLE. He has contributed to the future viability of biobased products through his service on the US Department of Agriculture/US Department of Energy Biomass Research and Development Advisory Committee.
An international expert in biobased lubricants, Dr. Honary has ten patents and two pending patents including patents on the use of microwaves for processing grease. He is the author of a book on biobased lubricants, several book chapters, as well as numerous publications and invited presentations. Dr. Honary is the recipient of the 2020 NLGI Fellows Award.
Lloyd Nelson, Kraton
SPEAKER: The future of bio-based lubricants: challenges and opportunities
BIOGRAPHY:
Lloyd Nelson obtained his PhD in Organic Chemistry from the University of Alberta, Edmonton in 1986. He has since worked on plant-based chemistries in the biobased fuel and lubricants space with the Plant Biotechnology Institute in Saskatoon; Mobil Oil in Pennington, Eastern Regional Research Center of the USDA in Wyndmoor, PA; and CIBA Specialty Chemicals in Tarrytown, NY. He is currently a Principal Scientist with Kraton Corporation. Lloyd holds 12 patents in fuels and lubricants space.
Markus Scherer, General Manager, MaBiMa
SPEAKER: Sustainability in the lubricants industry
BIOGRAPHY:
Markus looks back at more than 25 years experience in the global lubricants industry. During his career Markus went through various leadership positions in both technical and commercial areas. He worked for BASF and prior to that for Evonik. He is a trained chemist and contributed more than 60 patents to the industry, thereof 27 patents as first author. Markus has recently found his own company MaBiMa where he offers consulting services amongst others to the lubricant industry. MaBiMa aims at the improvement of sustainability profiles employing a strong link between technical and marketing elements.
Mick Wragg, Lubrizol
SPEAKER: Sustainability in the lubricants industry
BIOGRAPHY:
Mick has worked for Lubrizol Limited, a UK-based subsidiary of The Lubrizol Corporation, for almost 25 years and his current role is Chief Product Steward for Lubrizol Additives. Mick previously held various technical and leadership positions in Lubrizol’s corporate Product Safety & Compliance department, including having company-wide responsibility for implementing EU REACH processes and practices. He now leads a team of regulatory professionals providing support and guidance to Lubrizol Additives.
Mick has significant trade association experience. In the past he chaired the Health, Safety & Legislative Sub-Committee of the European Petroleum Additives Manufacturer’s Technical Committee (ATC) and is currently Vice-Chair of the recently formed ATC Sustainability Sub-Committee. Mick also currently chairs the Alkanolamines Borate REACH Consortium and the UK CIA Environmental Health Issue Team, with the latter responsible for monitoring and providing industry advocacy on topics such as combination effects and endocrine disruptors. He is also an active participant on several other European industry committees.
Mick is a chemist by education and spent several years as a practicing toxicologist at a UK contract laboratory prior to joining Lubrizol in 1997. He also has international experience working at Lubrizol’s corporate headquarters in Cleveland, Ohio for several years.
Mika Kettunen, Neste
SPEAKER: The future of bio-based lubricants: challenges and opportunities
BIOGRAPHY:
Mika Kettunen received his MSc from University of Helsinki in 2000. He holds a PhD in Chemistry and before joining Neste, has done research work in Ireland, Germany and the US. Mika joined Neste 14 years ago and currently holds a position as Technical Product Manager. He supports Base Oil sales and production with responsibility for formulation development projects in driveline and industrial applications. He works in close cooperation with additive manufacturers and Neste R&D.
Mika represents Finland in the CEN (European Committee for Standardization) working group for Bio-Lubricants and has been a member of the UEIL Sustainability Task Force, which created the strategy to align a common sustainability agenda for the European lubricants industry. Mika continues this work as a chair of the recently formed ATIEL Sustainability committee.
Milind Phadke, Vice President, Energy Market Research, Kline
SPEAKER: The future of sustainable mobility
BIOGRAPHY:
Milind leads the Energy Market Research business at Kline & Company. He is responsible for Kline’s off-the-shelf reports covering various downstream specialty products.
Milind has been instrumental in the growth of Kline’s portfolio of Energy titles covering all major products and regions. During his nearly 20-year tenure with Kline, Milind has consulted with clients on strategic and tactical issues impacting various downstream specialty product markets.
Peter Hawighorst, ISCC
SPEAKER: The future of bio-based lubricants: challenges and opportunities
BIOGRAPHY:
Dr. Peter Hawighorst is a program manager at ISCC System GmbH. He studied agricultural sciences at the University of Bonn and did his PhD studies in forest sciences at the University of Goettingen. Before joining ISCC, he worked as a scientific coordinater at the Buesgen-Institut, University of Goettingen. At ISCC his work is focusing on sustainability certification and traceability along complex supply chains. Peter was part of the team developing the ISCC PLUS scheme and its approach for sustainability certification of bio-based and circular feedstocks and products.

BIOGRAPHY:
Patrick is the Technical Manager for the Europe/Africa/Middle East Zone of ExxonMobil Lubricants Technology, supporting the Fuels and Lubricants business.
He joined ExxonMobil in 1991, and has had various assignments in UK, Belgium and USA, spanning the different functions of Research & Development, Product Line Management, Marketing, Corporate Planning and Sales, as well as having led several global business and systems projects.
Peter Vickers, Vickers Oils
SPEAKER: From resilience to re-imagination of the future
BIOGRAPHY:
Peter Vickers is Chairman of Benjn. R. Vickers & Sons Ltd (“Vickers Oils”), based in Leeds, UK, which was established in 1828 and remains a family-owned company, employing about 65 staff. Peter and his son represent the fifth and sixth generations of the family to be engaged in the lubricants business.
Vickers Oils formulates, manufactures and markets specialised industrial and marine lubricants, exporting 95% of its business worldwide. In the early 1990s, Vickers Oils pioneered the development and use of “Environmentally Acceptable Lubricants” for the worldwide shipping industry.
Peter graduated from Oxford University in 1982 and joined Vickers Oils immediately as a management trainee, taking on worldwide sales responsibilities and personnel management before becoming Managing Director and later Chairman. He is a former President of the UK Lubricants Association (UKLA) and now helps to represent it at the European level as one of the two UKLA members of UEIL’s Sustainability Committee.

BIOGRAPHY:
Consultant on both sides of the interface between chemical companies and their Lubricants industry customers. A freelance writer on Fuels and Lubricants industry affairs.
Doctoral and post-doctoral studies of Fischer-Tropsch (GTL) and Ziegler-Natta (polyolefin) catalysts. Managed and conducted analytical support across the chemicals and oil industries for eight years.
Over 23 years in Lubricants, 18 as the Technology representative on Shell’s global procurement team; annual spend up to US$1.6 billion. Major projects include:
- Managing the evolution of Shell’s Lubricants Quality System into a single, global system compliant with many industry standards.

Valentina Serra-Holm, UEIL President
WELCOME SESSION and MODERATOR: From resilience to re-imagination of the future
BIOGRAPHY:
Valentina has over twenty years’ experience in the oil and lubricant industry, boasting several senior technical and commercial roles. She is passionate about building bridges between the technical and the commercial sides of businesses, and creating solution-based business approaches.
Since 2016 Valentina serves as President of UEIL. In addition, she served as director of the European Lubricating Grease Institute (ELGI) from 2013 to 2017, and as a course instructor for the US-based National Lubricating Grease Institute (NLGI) and Society of Tribology and Lubrication Engineers (STLE).
She holds MS and PhD degrees in Chemical Engineering from the Polytechnic University of Turin (Italy). In addition, she holds a PhD in Chemical Reaction Engineering from Åbo Akademi University (Finland). Valentina is the author of numerous scientific and technical publications, patents, and international presentations in the field of specialty oils and lubricants.
William Downey, Novvi
MODERATOR: The future of bio-based lubricants: challenges and opportunities
BIOGRAPHY:
William started his career in the lubricants business in an eight- year tenure with the Royal Dutch Shell/ Group of Companies, in technology, lubricants, base oils and additives. Across these endeavors, he has 40 years of experience in the petroleum and chemical industry and is recognized as an expert in the lubricants, wax, and petroleum specialties value chains. He has addressed and moderated ICIS Conferences in Dubai, London, New York, Jersey City, NJ, Sao Paulo, and Seoul.
